The nationally renowned College for Seniors will open registration for its new summer semester courses on May 20, in UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center. The College for Seniors courses are offered by OLLI, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville.
The summer semester courses begin June 16, and the lineup contains new offerings and popular favorites, skills courses, and serious academic exploration. No tests or grades are given. Registration forms may be mailed to the Reuter Center; preferential registration is given to those who come to the Reuter Center in person beginning May 20. Bibliophiles can choose between offerings like “The Literature of Madison County,” “American Short Story Masterpieces,” and “Relating Shakespeare’s Plays to Modern Times.” In “Cooking with Mars and Venus,” participants will learn a variety of kitchen skills, from dicing and chopping to brining, through demonstrations and hands-on practice.
Pianist and composer Dave Bates will teach a course in the history of Broadway, with opportunities to sing along to the songs studied in the class. Other course subjects include: “The Female Image in Biblical Thought,” “Belly Dance for Wellness,” “Beginning French,” “The Quantum Enigma,” “Beginning Digital Camera,” “Closed End Mutual Funds,” and “Pilates for Seniors.” “Zentangle” will teach the method of creating beautiful images through drawing structured patterns.
In-person registration for College for Seniors courses begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20; the doors to UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center will open at 7:30 a.m. The cost for College for Seniors courses is $75 for an initial registration of up to three courses. Add/drop begins Wednesday, June 4, at which time participants may add additional courses at no additional cost. Students must also pay the OLLI membership fee of $60. Membership benefits include a campus parking permit, access to the university library, discounts on special events and more.
