Megan Shepherd to Present Writing/Publishing Workshop at UNC Asheville May 20

Megan Shepherd, author of The Madman’s Daughter, a New York Times best-seller, will present a workshop, Young at Heart: Writing and Publishing Young Adult Fiction, from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, May 20, at UNC Asheville. Cost of the workshop is $35 and advance registration is required.

"There are a lot of misconceptions about what young adult literature is," says Shepherd. "In this craft talk, we’ll discuss the philosophy behind YA literature, how it differs from other categories like middle grade and adult fiction, how literary and commercial YA varies, and what the ‘rules’ are – if there are any – for writing in this age range. We’ll also touch on the publishing side of writing YA, including how to approach agents and editors with your YA work."

Shepherd’s debut novel, The Madman’s Daughter, won the 2013 North Carolina Young Book Award and has been optioned for film by Paramount Pictures. She followed that book with two sequels, Her Dark Curiosity and A Cold Legacy. She also is the author of another three-book series begun by The Cage, also a New York Times best-seller, and she has written the middle grades novel, The Secret Horses of Briar Hill. Her shorter works include young adult historical fiction and horror stories.

Shepherd, who “grew up” in her family’s independent book store and who now lives and writes on a farm near Asheville, has taught in UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program which is presenting this workshop. To register, contact Nancy Williams at or 828.250.2353.
