UNC Asheville welcomed Lisa Tandan to the role of Career Center director on Oct. 2. A North Carolina native, Tandan previously served as director of career development and assessment at Hofstra University in New York. The move to UNC Asheville provides Tandan with an opportunity to return to her home state, and to her liberal arts roots.

"I wanted a small population where I could get to know the students and the administration well; I wanted to be a part of a close-knit community; and I'm a product of the liberal arts, so it has a special place in my heart" said Tandan, who graduated from Wake Forest University with a bachelor's degree in sociology. "Liberal arts is one of the best ways to prepare students not only for careers, but life."

Tandan hopes to make the services offered by the Career Center an integrated part of classroom education.

"We're working with faculty, student affairs, and the campus at large to be where students are, and providing that career education throughout campus so that every student who graduates from UNC Asheville is ready to take the next step for their career, no matter what that may be," Tandan said.

Tandan was first drawn to working in college career services as a graduate student at the College of William and Mary, where she earned a master’s degree in counseling. "I loved the positivity and the optimism associated with career counseling," Tandan explained. "A lot of career counseling is around identity – who do you want to be, who do you feel like you are, and what's the path from who you are to who you want to be. There's so much optimism there, and excitement."

Career education is invaluable to college students, Tandan said, whether it's providing help finding an internship, preparing for interviews, or simply helping students find the right language to best leverage their experiences to land the job of their dreams. But first, Tandan wants to take some time to really get to know the university.

"My plan for first three months is to listen and learn as much as I can about UNC Asheville, and with the support of my team we will start working on our strategic plan, one that I hope will be ambitious and help every UNC Asheville student receive some form of career education during their time at UNC Asheville."
