Bill Haggard, UNC Asheville vice chancellor for student affairs, has received the Dr. Zenobia Lawrence Hikes Memorial Campus Safety Excellence Award from the NASPA Campus Safety and Violence Prevention Knowledge Community. The award was presented on March 2, 2018, at the NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) Annual Conference in Philadelphia.

This annual award is a special recognition given to a university employee who has, over a sustained period of time, advanced the quality of campus safety by supporting student affairs staff and programs, built collaboration in order to ensure a safer campus, and/or is a noted leader or scholar regarding campus safety issues.

Haggard received the award for sustained professional service as a student affairs professional; high-level competency in administrative skills; merited respect and support of students, faculty, and fellow administrators on campus; direct involvement in enhancing the quality of campus safety; and involving colleagues in creating a safe campus community.

UNC Asheville’s campus safety and violence prevention work is the result of combined effort of many people across campus, Haggard said.

“I know that the work that’s done is done by a lot of really good people, and it’s not just my personal accomplishment,” Haggard said.

That work includes full-scale and table-top emergency exercises, active shooter training, building relationships between campus police and the campus community, suicide prevention, and prevention of and response to sexual assault.

Haggard served a two-year term as chair of the Campus Safety and Violence Prevention Knowledge Community, a group within NASPA dedicated to connecting members and facilitating the sharing of knowledge. As chair Haggard coordinated robust conference programs on campus safety and violence prevention, including workshops and breakout sessions.
