The German Club Christmas Market

For UNC Asheville’s German Club, Christmas is coming early this year. They’ll be hosting their third annual Weihnachtsmarkt this Friday, Nov. 17. The event will take place in Lipinsky Hall from 5 – 8 p.m.

Weihnachtsmarkt is a traditional German Christmas market where shoppers can buy festive crafts, homemade baked goods, and more. “We’re going to be selling a bunch of seasonal items,” says German Club treasurer and senior environmental studies major Elijah Duke. “Things like cupcakes and candied almonds, gingerbread, Advent calendars, and the second edition of our recipe book. It’s just like a traditional German Christmas market, except in Lipinsky.”

Like in years prior, all the proceeds from Weihnachtsmarkt will go to charity. Last year the German club raised over $1,000 for Youth OUTright, and this year they’re determined to top that. This year’s charity is Eliada Homes, a non-profit organization that works to provide positive child and youth development programming to more than 700 children and adolescents annually.

Local businesses have also gotten in on the holiday cheer. Shops like Malaprops, Nine Mile and White Duck Taco have donated items to be sold at this year’s market along with the other holiday goodies the German Club is making from scratch.
